Cyber Security is no longer an afterthought, most consumers do not understand the complexities of configuring a home Wi-Fi router.
Would you leave the front door of your home wide open? for anyone to do a walk-through? Would you invite a child predator in to your home to prey on your kids? Would you click on that email that your Bank sent you asking you, to reset your password? Would you electronically send money to someone on the other side of a phone call pretending to be a family member in trouble? Everyone would answer NO! to these questions, so, Why are Cyber Criminals getting RICH?! You can not depend on anyone but yourself in the middle of a crisis, Secure your digital life now!
education and awareness is the key.
Most personal computer (Home PCs) systems are infected with various types of Malware, tacking cookies and computer viral infections.
Ransomware is the most prevalent these days. The Corporate World spends 100s of thousands of dollars to protect its systems from Cyber Attacks. Today's consumers must educate themselves to protect themselves from falling victim. Do you know that most Internet Services Providers (ISPs) offer free Anti Virus applications to protect your personal computers at home? Yes, all you need to do is ask for it, it may just be a slim-down version, but some protection is better than no protection at all. Antivirus software will not fully protect you from the onslaught of attackers on the internet, a layered approach is what will minimize your chances of becoming the next victim.
Communicating, sharing life accomplishments, information, and news can be published and shared across the Globe in a matter of seconds. We share our accomplishments, turmoil, and great exotic travel stories across this great planet of ours. I wonder!? could anyone use that information against us?!
Social Engineering is a skill that leet (1337) cyber attackers/stalkers/hackers will use against you to pull at your heartstrings and make you click that link that your better judgment is screaming out NOo don't do it! , Annndd Click! and the next thought in your brain is "Oh Shit! What did I just do?!"
Share as little data of yourself as possible anywhere and everywhere, especially birth dates, your mother's maiden name, the last 3 digits of your postal code, and yeah don't forget your favorite pet's name or your favorite sports team.
So your TV is hooked in to the largest Global Network know to Human Kind and, so is your fridge, coffee maker, stove, washer, dryer, lights, garage door and all your home security devices including your front door. Just imagine this, the security for all these devices are running from your Home WiFi router, which just happens to be your gateway to the largest known network on planet earth, the INTERNET, open the flood gates! I got news for you, the flood gates have been opened for decades.
You better double check your front door, I think you may have possibly left your keys in the lock.
We live in a Digital World and digital assistants are a natural progression in life, but! do you enjoy having your conversation monitored endlessly so that a device can respond and react on Command?, "Alexa! pull my finger!"
Using your device to search the Internet and changing the channels on your TV instead of using your remote control or and turning on a stereo by voice command is very cool indeed, don't get me wrong I too like it, but!, just image the kind of power this device now has if it was to be manipulated from the Internet by some anonymous nefarious individual.
Until the Industry seriously starts securing IOT devices properly, my recommendation is to change your TV channels with your remote control until such time that your TV can read your thoughts telepathically.
Alexa! Turn heat on 100 degrees, well not exactly!, but! do you have an answering machine built in to your home phone that is audible in the room where one of these personal assistants may be just sitting around listening?! The next time you are out doing groceries, call home and leave a message for Alexa or SIRI, asking it to "Google! Turn on TV, FULL Volume".
Here is some FREE advice and information, you no longer need to call out your geek nephew or niece for.
Are you looking to buy a new computer? and don't know which one to get! let me save you sometime, and a few bucks!, buy the one that you can most afford. PC or MAC? well it really depends on what you can afford, Macs do offer a better user experience and are more reliable (from my point of view, less virus issues, PCs are a bit cheaper in cost and offer allot more variety of applications, LINUX operating systems is also an excellent alternative from a MAC and Windows systems, LINUX can be downloaded from the internet for free from reputable sources. LINUX can run on both PC or MAC hardware, and is just as secured from a computer security perspective. For a home user with minimal computer experience I would recommend a MAC, but again it comes down to what is affordable to you, most consumer computers these days are roughly the same with the price point of just over $1000.00 CA and if you need more power than the cost could start at about $1500.00 CA and can go much higher.
Gaming laptops start at about $2000 ca and go much higher from there, its all about the performance and indeed, you get what you pay for.
